challenger-604-Exterior1

Bombardier built the original Challenger 604 with the primary goal of passenger comfort. It is unusually wide-bodied and can carry up to nineteen passengers in its 8.2 foot wide cabin. The Challenger 604 is a private jet well-suited for frequent cross-country trips under rigorous conditions, and refinements like a more advanced engines and winglets make the Challenger 604 capable of transoceanic range. The Challenger 604 was also one of the first business jets designed with a super-critical wing.

The Challenger 604 is a major upgrade from the original 600 by incorporating new, more powerful, CF-34-3B Engines. These engines were flat rated and were able to produce 8,729 pounds of thrust per engine. These engines were equipped with automatic power reserve and were capable of 9,220 pounds of thrust per engine with reserve initiated. It was also fitted with a larger fuel supply made up of saddle tanks in the rear of the aircraft. The landing gear was redone to allow for higher takeoff and landing weights. There were a series of structural improvements to the wings and tail section. One of the most notable upgrades to the Challenger 604 was the advanced, Collins ProLine 4 EFIS avionics system, with color CRT display screens. The Challenger 604 maximum takeoff weight was also increased, allowing more carrying capacity.

Several variants of the Challenger 604 have been manufactured to meet demanding missions of various military entities around the world. The United States Coast Guard took delivery of a Medium Range Command and Control Aircraft. Another, multi mission, Challenger 604 was acquired by the Danish military for maritime patrol and search and rescue missions. This aircraft is also capable of landing on short, gravel runways common to the region.
